Cowl

This is my first original design. It's only a rectangle, so I'm not that proud, but it's a start.
A. Easy pattern version - knit a rectangle 55cm x 65 cm, then sew up!.

I wanted a long cowl that would serve as a neck warmer, but be long enough to be a head covering too. When I'm off birding it should keep me nice and snug. (That's why it's going to be in spruce green too. As camouflage. I don't really like green, but some bluey greens are okay).
Looking at other cowl patterns on the web I wanted mine to be quite long - 55cm. Circumference is 65cm for a snug fit around my face. I've read that the fit should have an inch of two of negative ease, but I was a bit scared of making it too tight.
Top and bottom have to be a stitch that doesn't curl, so I chose 2" of seed stitch at both ends.
The middle could be any pattern, (one with not too many repeats). I chose 'mistake stitch' which is reversible, and makes a nice stretchy rib apparently.
Mistake Stitch:

  • Multiples of 4, plus 3
  • *K2, P2;repeat from *, end = K2, P1
  • repeat indefinitely
Here goes!
Yarn: Stylecraft Special (aran with wool)
Needles: 5mm - really long ones!
Tension: 9 stitches to 5 cm.
Cast on 117 st (4x28=112. Then add 3, then add another two for sewing up edges.)
Row 1:K1, *K1, P1 to last 2 stitches, P1, K1
Repeat for 5 cm.
Continue in mistake rib for 35 cm.
Go back to rib for another 5cm.
Actually, for the last 5 cm of ribbing I went down to a smaller size needle, so the cowl would fit a bit more snugly around my head. See if you have to adjust the fit.
